It’s quite staggering how quickly a tree can come into life with new green leaf and within just a matter of weeks these will be turning from bright apple green through darker shades, onto yellow, orange and then that magnificent blaze of red. I have one such tree that has origins in Canada. The leaf is just like a small maple leaf and it does this amazing year round colour change. In the winter it loses every single leaf and stands there forlornly hoping ot be pruned or otherwise hurt. I collct up the leaves as they stay damp and soft for a few weeks. I have made a great deal of leaf mould over the years. The fallen leaves are raked up, bunged in as many spent compost bags as I have and once just after half full, they get squashed to expell air before being sent on it’s long journy up the east coast.
