Clay Pellets Off The Menu, Sadly

Clay Pellets Off The Menu, Sadly

I do love a burst of gardening – there is something very relaxing about weeding on a summer’s day.  However, those same tasks on a cold wet winter day is not quite the same barrel of laughs.  I live in an area that is affected by very serious clay – it is so thick and claggy after a damp period.  Once the temperature drops, the clagginess increases by twice as much.  I used to use a product called clay pellets – natural gypsum in little balls, that are tossed around all over the borders and left on there until after as much frost as possible.   Not sure how this breaks up the clay but it certainly does.  I found the horrid tough clumps gradually break up to form a lovely soft loam.  It really did improve the mulch around my older shrubs, and they were flourishing every spring.  to my surprise, I was unable to buy any more clay pellets.  I tried buying just the gypsum, it comes looking rather like plaster of paris before making up and worked much the same!
