Keeping An Abundance Of Blooms

Keeping An Abundance Of Blooms

Trying to keep the garden full of flowers over a longer summer period is sometimes tricky – I’ve found that over the years my favourite plants reward me by letting me propogae from them at regular intervals but the ones I’ve never felt much affinity with don’t prosper.   It’s an odd thing.  However, to keep that contual round of flowering, plants need drastic cutting back in the autumn.  Once the new growth starts the following year, mulching around their base and regular feeding helps mine.  I have very heavy clay soil, it’s hard work but nutritient rich forthe plants.  I just top that up with a light feed.   I also try to keep on top of the dead heading during the blooming period.  Most plant will respond well to having the blown blooms cut off – take a geum for example, that will flower from early summer right through to autumn if I chop off the old blooms.  the same goes for almost everything in my borders.  It saves the parent plant from wasting energy supporting spent blooms.
